On November 8, Nishi-Nippon Railroad Co Ltd. President and CEO Sumio Kuratomi announced at a press conference that the company is looking to increase fares. Nishitetsu issued the statement after it was revealed that the government is looking to raise consumption tax to 10% next October. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe presented the policy at a special cabinet meeting last month. Nishitetsu did not raise bus fares 21 years ago when the consumption tax was raised from 3% to 5%. The cost of bus and train ticket did go up after consumption tax was increased to 8% in 2014, although the price hike did not extend to some Nishitetsu commuter passes.
