Nokonoshima, in Hakata Bay, is one of 23 islands in Japan that could become officially recognised as a remote island if current registration criteria are changed. The federal government will come to a decision on changes by summer. Japan currently has 254 registered remote islands. The criteria for authorizing remote islands has not changed since 1964: distance from the mainland to the island must be over 5km (inland sea) or 10km (open sea), the island must have a population over 100, and less than 3 ferries visiting per day. However this criteria will be reviewed, to combat decreasing population on small islands. Once authorized as a remote island, inhabitants of Nokonoshima will receive a subsidy, and public enterprises will be reevaluated. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun Jan 7.
