Norovirus Warning

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare has issued a warning to the public as we enter winter – the peak season for norovirus outbreaks in Japan. Last year, norovirus was most widespread in December, hence the early warning this year. Outbreaks of the virus (an infectious gastroentritis) have demonstrated a rising trend, with Kyushu and Kansai areas most strongly affected. Norovirus symptoms usually appear one to two days after infection, and the virus spreads quickly from person to person. The first symptom is a sudden feeling of sickness, followed by forceful vomiting and diarrhoea. Generally, it takes 1~2 days for a full recovery. Children and the elderly are at a higher risk of dehydration, which can heighten the symptoms. The top preventative measure is maintaining a high standard of personal hygiene. Wash your hands thoroughly before handling food or eating, and especially after using the bathroom. You should avoid touching surfaces or objects contaminated with norovirus, and avoid having direct contact with those infected with norovirus. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun Nov 28, p.34
