Fishery bodies in the Buzen and Chikuzen districts of Fukuoka Prefecture have prohibited the fishing of octopus less than 400 grams in a 20-kilometer stretch along the Kitakyushu coast in the Kammon Strait. Fishing cooperatives in the area are working to convert the Kammon Strait octopus into a national brand, but their efforts are hampered by recreational fishermen who seek the common octopus, or madako in Japanese. The currents in the strait exceed 20 kph, so these octopuses have meatier, tastier legs.
