Oita City Street Gets See-Through Toilet

The Wakakusa-dori Shopkeeper’s Association in Oita City has installed a unique public toilet to help bring customers back to the area. The walls of the toilet are transparent, clearly revealing the interior to passers-by, but as soon as anyone enters, a sensor is activated that switches the glass to a frosted state. The Association got the idea from similar initiatives reported last year in France and Belgium. When it applied for a national government community revitalization subsidy, its proposal was accepted for its uniqueness. The toilet is open from 7:00~22:00 and local eateries, fast food restaurants and clinics will contribute to cleaning and lock-up duties. There are also security cameras nearby to discourage vandalism. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun 3/3
