Oita Prefecture Announces Names of Hovercraft Connecting Airport and City

Oita Prefecture announced on the 7th the names of the hovercrafts that will connect Oita Airport (in Kunisaki City) and Oita City. Inspired by the names of three Edo-era scholars and educators called “Bungo no Sanken”, the three hovercrafts have been named “Baien”, “Banri”, and “Tanso”. The prefecture plans to start operation in the 2023 fiscal year. The names of the hovercrafts were publicly solicited, and multiple proposals were received for each name. In a press conference on the same day, Governor Hirose explained that the names are “names that can appeal to Oita’s local characteristics both domestically and internationally, and are easy to remember for foreigners.” The operation will be handled by Daiichi Kotsu Sangyo. By traveling over the sea, the time required between the airport and Oita City will be shortened to about 25 minutes, about half the time required by land. The prefecture is currently preparing the departure and arrival locations on the airport side and the city side, and the body of the hovercrafts will be delivered from summer 2023.
