A survey conducted two years after foot-and-mouth disease devastated the livestock industry in Miyazaki Prefecture found that only 59% of the farmers have resumed their business. An estimated 30% have given it up entirely due to concerns about their future prospects. Difficulties include the slumping demand due to the aftereffects of the Tohoku disaster, the higher feed prices caused by the conversion of crops to biofuels, and concerns over Japan’s participation in TPP.
