Ontayaki Minto Festival Cancelled, Koishiwara-yaki Minto Mura Festival to Go Ahead

The Hita City Cooperative announced that the Ontayaki Minto Festival this October where local potters sell their creations at reasonable prices, will be cancelled due to the damage caused to the kilns by the torrential rain that hit Hita City in Oita Prefecture and the whole of northern Kyushu in July. New pottery cannot be produced in the local workshops, and it is expected that a full-scale recovery might take as long as a year. The bi-annual festival started in 1962 and welcomed around 12,000 visitors last year. Meanwhile, it has been revealed that the Minto Mura Festival, which sells low priced Koishiwarayaki and Takatoriyaki ceramics will be held from Oct. 7 to Oct. 9. Some of the local kilns in the area are not up and running yet because of the havoc caused by the extreme weather conditions Toho Village experienced, but many are set to resume operations.
