At 19:18 on Feb. 16, one of Nishitetsu’s double-decker open-top sightseeing buses was involved in an accident at the Watanabe-dori intersection in Tenjin. The bus, which was stopped at a red light, lurched into the oncoming lane and struck a car, which was also waiting at the signal, head-on. The driver of the car and none of the 25 passengers on the bus were injured, but the bus driver, age 53, was taken to the hospital by ambulance. According to police, the bus was stopped at the stop light, but something caused it to move suddenly into the opposite lane. According to the Nishitetsu Office of Public Relations, “the bus driver appears to have fallen ill while driving.” All of the passengers were refunded their ¥1,540 fares.
