A strong earthquake hit the island chain of Tokara, Kagoshima Prefecture, on Dec. 9. The quake with a shindo scale of 5 (magnitude 6.1) occurred in the same area, which experienced over 230 earthquakes in the preceding five days. Japan Meteorological Agency warns of the risk of another major quake for the next few to several weeks.
