Plunge in Saga Prefecture’s Food Self-Sufficiency Rate

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries released figures for the food self-sufficiency rate for the 47 prefectures nationwide (converted to calories). These figures showed that the rate for Saga Prefecture dropped 29 percentage points from the previous year to 67%, which was the largest decline in the country. The plunge in the self-sufficiency rate was attributed to the impact of Typhoon #13. The rate declined for five of the seven Kyushu prefectures. In contrast, with livestock production booming in southern Kyushu, and the rate for Kagoshima Prefecture rose 2 percentage points to 85%, the highest in the region and seventh nationwide. Fukuoka Prefecture’s rate of 19% was three percentage points lower than the year before, making it the lowest in Kyushu.
