Prefectural and Municipal Elections Kick Off in Kyushu

Campaigning has begun for the assembly elections for prefectures and cities in Japan on Mar. 29. Fukuoka Prefecture officially announced the names of 123 candidates (eight fewer from the previous election) who will run for the 87 seats of the prefectural assembly. Amongst the 45 electoral districts, there will be a walkover in 18 areas where thirty-one candidates are running. A record lowest of 459 candidates are standing for the prefectural assembly in Kyushu. Meanwhile, Fukuoka City announced 89 candidates (nine more than the previous election) running for the 62 seats of the city’s assembly. The campaign will continue for nine days until the voting day on April 7 along with the gubernatorial elections. Source: NHK News Web, 3/29/2019
