The Prefectural University of Kumamoto will open a School of Semiconductor Studies on April 1, 2027, with an annual intake of 60 students. The program will emphasize practical training and cooperation with companies in and outside Kumamoto, including internships and support for graduation research presentations. Courses will cover semiconductor chip design and artificial intelligence, along with related fields such as business, environmental issues and legal systems. The university aims to train specialists amid a shortage of semiconductor talent. Hideharu Amano, formerly a professor at Keio University, will serve as dean, while former Panasonic engineer Masaaki Niwa will lead the department. University chairman Tadahiro Kuroda highlighted both appointees’ research and teaching experience.
