The recent release of FY 2008 consolidated business results for the 61 leading Kyushu companies (excluding banks and those listed on the first section of stock exchanges) revealed that 34, or nearly 60%, posted revenue declines, and 49, or more than 80%, posted lower current profit or outright losses. The recent global economic downturn equally affected both export-reliant manufacturing companies as well as those in the non-manufacturing sector. The prospects for improvement appear to be bleak, as only 20% project increased revenue and earnings for the current fiscal year.
