Proposal to Increase Hot Spring Tax in Beppu

The Beppu Mirai Kento Kaigi (Future Review Conference) submitted a proposal to Beppu City Mayor Yasuhiro Nagano calling for an increase on hot spring tax. Proposals can be submitted to the city assembly as early as this March. Taxation laws stipulate that guests staying in hot spring towns pay ¥150 per night, however this figure can be independently raised by municipalities. To date, four local governments have increased the tax by up to ¥250. Beppu City hopes that tax supporters view the increase as a means of generating revenue, while opposing parties fear that it might have a negative impact on the number of people visiting the area.
