A team from Okayama University has confirmed the existence of large quantities of the rare earth metal antimony in the seabed of Kagoshima Bay. They estimate the bed contains as much as 900,000 tons, equivalent to 180 times the amount sold in Japan in a year. The metal is used in the electronics industry for the production of semiconductors and battery terminals. China currently accounts for about 80% of the world’s production.
