The Kyushu District Transport Bureau submitted its report on shipbuilding orders for the 58 shipyards in Kyushu and western Yamaguchi Prefecture in FY 2008. The bureau calculated the orders for ships at least 20 gross tons in weight. The shipyards received orders for 104 shops, with an aggregate weight of 3.346 million gross tons. This represents a 48.7% drop in tonnage from the previous year. The bureau attributes the decline to poor economic conditions, and says it is the largest year-on-year decline since they began keeping records in 1980.
