Despite the cancelation of Hakata Gion Yamakasa this year, many ‘yamanobose’ (participants) enthusiastically visited torii-gated Hakozaki Beach on July 1 to celebrate the traditional opening day of the festival. Looking back on history, the festival has experienced at least three postponements due to cholera epidemics in the Meiji period. Historical resources, including ‘Yamakasa Kiroku’ (Yamakasa Records) also explain that the festival ran without spectators in 1756 to avoid the spread of the disease.
