Red Tide Ends in Ariake Sea

Government officials in Saga Prefecture report that the harmful vegetable plankton causing the red tide have now disappeared. The prefecture took water samples in nine locations in the sea and found no plankton cells. The government notes, however, that if the lack of rain and high water temperatures continue, the plankton might reemerge in large numbers. This year’s occurrence of the red tide caused substantial damage to small fish, crabs, and bivalves in the Ariake Sea.
