The central government is restricting the height of buildings in Fukuoka City’s redevelopment of Hakata Port’s waterfront district. The current upper limit is in the 70 to 90 meter range, but it is understood that the policy might be relaxed, allowing buildings to stand at 100 meters, which equates to 22 stories. It is believed that movement on the issue might be related to a surge in interest from hotels and commercial facilities to invest in the area. The city highlighted its status as a special strategic zone in a bid to seek deregulation on aviation laws surrounding the issue. Fukuoka City is also in discussion with the government about the possibility of raising the height of buildings in the area around Hakata Station from 50 to 60 meters.
