A meeting between the Genkai Genpatsu (Genkai Nuclear Power Plant) and local residents was held at Itobunka Hall in Itoshima last March 23. Itoshima is one of the cities within the 30-kilometer radius from plant numbers 3 and 4 located in Genkai, Higashimatsuura District of Saga Prefecture, which are planned to resume operation. The meeting, attended by 589 ward leaders and citizens from affected prefectures including Fukuoka and Nagasaki, aimed to explain and assure the people regarding iodine distribution and widespread evacuation plans in preparation for a worst-case scenario in light of the Fukushima Power Plant disaster. However, citizens raised their concerns one after the other, generally opposed to the reopening and citing that the lesson to be learned from Fukushima was to not open any more power plants instead of preparing for disasters. Fukuoka prefectural Governor Ogawa Hiroshi and Itoshima Mayor Tsukigata Yuuji both commented after the meeting that the opinions of each city and prefecture involved must be respected.
