Wine grapes were harvested for the first time in Omachi on August 25 as the town works toward producing Saga Prefecture’s first locally made wine. Saga is currently the only prefecture in Japan without a winery. Producer Toshiko Takahira has spent three years cultivating six varieties of white and red grapes for the Omachi Wine Project. Limited rainfall caused some grapes to lose moisture, but the harvested fruit developed high sugar levels. After sorting, the grapes will be processed at a winery in Nagasaki Prefecture.
