The Fukuoka City Board of Education is currently reviewing designs for Fukuoka City’s municipal junior high school uniforms with participation by students. In the city, 68 schools are adopting the present uniforms; the stand-up collar type for boys and the sailor skirt type for girls. The city is working on the redesigning, sighting a need to introduce more flexible and unisex uniforms that will be more comfortable for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students too. To meet these goals, the Board held a meeting on Jan. 23, inviting 14 students from those schools. The participants tried on four sample designs and exchanged ideas. It was the first time to include actual students into the process and to get their feedback. Experts will decide on a new design later this year. Source: NHK News Web, 1/23/2019
