University of Tokyo seismologist Kenji Satake warned in Fukuoka on August 5 that residents should treat the risk from an unruptured section of the Kego Fault Zone as a local concern. Speaking at the Fukuoka City Science Museum, Satake said the recent Kumamoto earthquake appeared to involve a section of the Hinagu Fault Zone that did not move during the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes. He noted that the southeastern section of the Kego Fault Zone, which runs through central Fukuoka and did not rupture in the 2005 Fukuoka offshore earthquake, is rated at the government’s highest risk level. Prefectural estimates project a magnitude 7.7 earthquake, intensity 7 shaking, 1,800 deaths, and 319,000 evacuees. Satake urged residents to prepare evacuation plans and strengthen homes.
