Severe Natural Disaster Declared in Kyushu – Heavy Rain Forecasted for July 9 Evening

Torrential rain inflicted grave damage in areas of Northern Kyushu in the early morning of July 8. The cities of Kurume (Fukuoka) and Hita (Oita) were hit by severe flooding as water overflowed from Chikugo River. A total of 533 houses were inundated in the morning in Kurume City, in addition to flooded roads reported at 94 locations. Fifty-nine fatalities, five cases of cardiopulmonary arrest, and seventeen cases of missing persons have been reported in Kyushu as of evening on Jul. 8. Evacuation orders were issued for approximately 780,000 people as of noon. Today (July 8), the center of the rain moved out of Kyushu to East; however, another severe rainfall is forecasted for the evening of July 9. Residents are advised to remain cautious of elevated risks of landslides and floods, in addition to tornadoes and lightning strikes. Additionally, those who intend to evacuate are advised to move before it gets dark. On the morning of Jul. 8, the government announced the intention to designate the situation as a ‘severe natural disaster’ to boost financial aids for victimized areas.
