Six New Yatai Applications Revoked

Fukuoka City has decided to rescind the successful applications for six new yatai food stalls slated to go into operation in the Tenjin area on April 1 due to misconduct that was uncovered in the application process. According to City officials, the six applicants revised their applications last October before submitting them to the City’s Yatai Selection Committee based on advice from the vice-chairman of a yatai owner’s association whose chairman was a member of the Selection Committee. After a deliberation, the Yatai Selection Committee determined that although the applicants did not appear to know that the vice-chairman had made contact with a member of the Selection Committee, the advice gave them an unfair advantage. For this reason, the Selection Committee rescinded their applications, but agreed to let them apply again when it re-opens applications for the six available slots late this month. In total, 15 new yatai were slated to open in Tenjin on April 1. The other nine successful applicants, who did not have dealings with the owner’s association, will be allowed to open their stalls as planned. The City aims to complete the new round of application screenings so that 15 new stalls in the Tenjin area can open as planned. Thirteen other new stalls were approved for the area outside of Tenjin, and their openings will not be affected. Source: Yomiuri Shimbun and Sankei Shimbun
