Sony Corp. and the city of Kitakyushu formally announced they would begin trials in September to launch an enterprise for the commercial recycling of rare metals. This is the first instance in Japan in which a manufacturer will be involved in the process from recovery of the materials to reinsertion in manufactured goods. During the trial, which will last for six months, recovery boxes will be placed in 60 locations in the city. Users will be able to discard their old digital cameras, e-dictionaries, and small games, which use rare metals, in the boxes.
