On Nov. 27, Space World in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Pref., took the decision to close its Christmas icerink after an outpouring of online criticsm at the 5,000 fish frozen into the ice. The rink opened on Nov. 12 and was filled with 5,000 fish that had been brought from fisheries in Kitakyushu City. Outrage occurred after rumours spread that the fish were frozen into the ice whilst still alive. Comments on Twitter included ‘kawaisou (poor fish!)’ and ‘kimochi warui (gross!)’. The rink will be defrosted and the fish removed before it reopens again next month. Space World is considering cremating the fish. Source: Mainichi Shinbun, 11/27
