At a fundraiser on Nov. 2, Fukuoka Mayor Soichiro Takashima spoke about his vision for the future in light of his track record over the past three years. Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso made a special appearance, and approximately 1,300 local businesspersons and other stakeholders attended the party. Some members of audience called for Mayor Takashima to run for reelection next fall. Mayor Takashima stressed the various initiatives he put in place in an effort to make Fukuoka “a leading city in Asia, balancing people and city functions with the environment”. Mayor Takashima declared, “The Asian age is here. It a time of significant growth for Fukuoka, and I will implement a blueprint for the future of Fukuoka that will make our citizens the happiest in Asia.” In his speech, Deputy Prime Minister Aso praised Mayor Takashima, “He is young and bright with communication skills and the ability to take action; he is a leader that you will not find any other designated city.” He continued, “There will be a mayoral election next year, so I ask all of you to help [Mayor Takashima] win without having me give any stump speeches.” In response to the calls for his reelection, Mayor Takashima told reporters, “I think community development cannot be achieved in one term. I am grateful for the positive response.” Source: Nishinippon Shimbun 11/5
