Tagawa in Fukuoka Prefecture, formerly a major coal producing area, has teamed with scholars from the municipal museum in Kushiro, Hokkaido, to create regional development schemes that utilize the coal culture. Kushiro has the only operating coal mine in Japan today. Museum officials from Kushiro recently inspected the old facilities at a former Mitsui mine in Tagawa and discussed ways to help the city have it designated as a World Heritage site. They hope to extend the cooperation overseas in the future into a North-South Coal Exchange
