Tamaya Returns to Fukuoka

Sasebo-based retailer Sasebo Tamaya announced plans to open five or six Rose Essence Tamaya stores in Fukuoka over the next five years. The first shop, which was opened as a so-called antenna shop in Hirao-josuimachi in late May, is now frequented by fans of the old Tamaya. The company is now contemplating opening stores in the Tenjin and Hakata areas. Fukuoka Tamaya, formerly the core of the Tamaya Group, was found in Nakasu in 1925 but it closed its doors in July 1999 amid intensifying competition. The Hirao-josuimachi antenna shop employs the familiar rose logo and the word “Tamaya” in English. The shop looks set to exceed its goal of generating annual sales of ¥50 million.
