Tap Water Odor reported in Parts of Fukuoka City

Reports from about 500 citizens about an unusual odor in tap water in Fukuoka City were recently reported. The waterworks bureau said that most areas had been cleaned by the morning of November 30. The water supply bureau reported that the odor smelled “like ink,” “musty,” and “tap water smells muddy”. The odor was found in Minami, Chuo, Hakata, and other areas where the Takamiya water purification plant distributes water. The cause of the odor was attributed to the fact that a large amount of water from a reservoir where odor-producing algae had grown flowed into the Naka River water pumped from the Bantaku water intake plant in Minami Ward. There is no health risk when drinking the water, and since the intake sites have already been switched and the water distributed, the situation is expected to improve in most areas.
