Taxi Fares Rise in the Fukuoka Urban Area for the First Time in a Decade

Approximately 6,200 taxis operating in 7 cities and 8 towns across the Fukuoka urban area raised their rates. Small and medium-sized vehicles are to be integrated into the normal car category, with the initial starting fare rising by ¥10 to ¥580. In addition, the late night rate period (20% surcharge) which previously began at 23:00, now starts one hour earlier at 22:00. The Kyushu District Transport Bureau has said that the rise in fuel and cost of paying staff are behind the first increase in the area for ten years. Taxi drivers are reportedly earning around 30% less than other industries, which has led to a shortage in people entering the profession. Source: TVQ Kyushu Broadcasting, 8/1/2017
