Tenjin Shintencho Renovation Announced

On November 30, the Shintencho shopping district union and companies such as PARCO and Nishitetsu officially announced plans to jointly redevelop the shopping district and adjacent areas and submitted an application to Fukuoka City. In conjunction with this application, the city released an image of the redevelopment plan, which calls for reorganizing the buildings in the Shintenmachi shopping district, which are currently subdivided and deteriorating, Fukuoka PARCO and the Nishitetsu station building, and dividing the district into east and west sections to create a complex of buildings. The lower floors of the building will be occupied by stores in the current shopping district to attract shoppers, and the history of the shopping district, which was established in 1946 after World War II, will be preserved. The area will also have a wide walkway to make it easier to walk and a plaza where many people can gather. This large-scale redevelopment project is part of Fukuoka City’s “Tenjin Big Bang” promotion project. The new building is scheduled to open in 2030 and will significantly change the look of Tenjin, Fukuoka’s downtown area. Source: Nishitetsu / NHK
