The national government has designated Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, Minamata, Kumamoto Prefecture; and Miyakojima, Okinawa Prefecture as model environmental cities. The joint projects on which they will work have yet to be formally determined, but they are expected to pool their knowledge for greenhouse gas reduction and share it with local governments nationwide. The cities were selected at the suggestion of the Kitakyushu municipal government, partly because all three have overcome serious pollution problems in the past.
