Trump Tariffs Prompt Emergency Talks at Fukuoka Prefectural Office

The Trump administration’s new 15% tariff on Japanese goods took effect on August 7, with uncertainty remaining over when the U.S. auto tariff will drop from 27.5% to 15%. Fukuoka Prefecture, a major automotive export hub, convened a meeting with national, prefectural, and business chamber officials to assess potential impacts, especially on subcontractors. The prefecture will survey around 3,000 local SMEs this month, compare results with past data, and develop additional support measures alongside existing financing aid. Officials also confirmed plans to urge the national government to push for a review of the U.S. tariff policy. Vice Governor Eguchi stressed that the full effects on the broad auto sector will emerge over time, and measures will be devised to minimize negative impacts. Source: NHK
