Tsunami Risk Near Fukuoka Higher Than Previously Estimated

A recent survey by Fukuoka Prefecture of nine offshore active faults near northern and northwestern Kyushu has found that potential tsunami heights could exceed previous estimates by up to two meters. Triggered by concerns following the Noto Peninsula earthquake, this is the first such preliminary study since a government report in 2022 identified the faults. In Munakata City, the maximum tsunami height is now projected at 6.29 meters, nearly two meters above prior estimates. Fukuoka City’s Nishi and Higashi Wards, Shingu Town, and Yahatanishi Ward in Kitakyushu also showed increases ranging from 12 cm to 78 cm. The prefecture plans further studies into potential damage scenarios based on these findings. Source: NHK
