Typhoon Haishen Intensifies as it Approaches Kyushu – River Floods Expected

According to the latest information from the Japan Meteorological Agency (as of Saturday, Sep. 5, 20:45), Typhoon Haishen’s central air pressure now measures 920 hectopascals. At this evening’s press conference, the agency mentioned the increasing likelihood of a ‘special warning’ issuance for Kagoshima Prefecture. In southern Kyushu, maximum wind speeds of 45 m/s (with gusts up to 65 m/s) are forecasted tomorrow (Sunday). Winds of up to 40~50 m/s (with gusts of 55~70 m/s) are predicted in other parts of Kyushu on Sep. 7. According to a calculation by a professor at the Tokyo University of Science, the risk of river floods at rivers, including the Onga River, Chikugo River, and Yabe River, are very high should rainfall exceed 200~250 mm/24hrs.
