Udon West Resumes ¥1 Donations

Fukuoka-based noodle chain Udon West will resume making donations of ¥1 per bowl of udon served at its 124 locations worldwide to local social service facilities.

West began making donations in 2005 but suspended them in 2009 after its sales suffered in the wake of a BSE scare and the subsequent collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008. The company expects to donate about ¥1 million yen per month starting with its March sales. “We grew slowly and steadily as a local company, so I hope to give something back to the community for many years to come,” said West president Kazuo Wakayama. The company is a firm believer in social contribution. On April 11, 2011, one month after the Great East Japan Earthquake, West donated the total daily sales from all of its domestic shops to the relief effort. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun, Mar. 29
