On Dec. 22, Fukuoka Bar Association announced the results of its research on local school dress rules. It pointed out that some unreasonably strict rules are in effect at municipal junior high schools, including a ban on fashion-conscious hairstyles and non-white underwear. At some schools, students who violate underwear guidelines are even asked to take them off at school. In addition, approximately one-third of schools recommend students to wear different school uniforms depending on their gender, even after the introduction of the uniforms that can be worn by either sex.
