Voting for the upper house election at eight constituencies in Kyushu and Yamaguchi was held on July 21 and the results gave the leading party a winning majority. In the Fukuoka constituency, nine candidates competed for three seats. Seiji Matsuyama (Liberal Democratic Party, incumbent) won a seat for his fourth term. Kuniyoshi Noda, (Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, incumbent) won a seat for his second term. Rokuta Shimono (Komeito, former junior high school teacher) won a seat for the first time.
