As a way to deal with the sharp reduction in the clam population nationwide, the Fukuoka Fisheries and Marine Technology Research Center has developed a device to breed clams using PVC pipe for water lines. Their experiments show that more than 90% of the clams, who were thought to be only able to live in sand, grow to an extent greater than that with other artificial breeding methods. This device costs less than 10% of existing equipment, and the center wants to commercialize it in three years. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun
