The Kangei Maru, operated by Tokyo-based Kyodo Senpaku, made its first call at Hakata Port on August 20. The whaling mother ship is 113 meters long and 21 meters wide. It can bring whales aboard, process and vacuum-pack the meat, and quick-freeze it, with storage capacity of 450 tons. A local professor said traditional whaling once took place around Oshima and Jinoshima in Munakata, and whale meat was used in dishes including chikuzenni. The company said the port call was intended to encourage more people in Fukuoka to eat whale meat. Source: TVQ News / TNC News
