Whisky production resumes in Oita Prefecture for the first time over 22 years. A liquor shop owner in Taketa City, Shoji Utoda, installed authentic Scottish equipment in a storehouse and opened his distillery. Using local spring water and barley sourced from Scotland, he aims to deliver thousands of bottles per year to the international market. Oita Prefecture once had a Nikka Whisky distillery in Hita City, but it closed in 1999. Source: Oita Press
