A biotechnology startup, Euglena Co., Ltd., held a demonstration of its midorimushi bio-diesel vehicle in Fukuoka City. The car ran a 3 km route carrying Japan’s Minister of State for Regional Revitalization, Satsuki Katayama, who attended a pre-event of G20 meetings in Fukuoka. It was the world’s first on-road demonstration of a car running a fuel made of microalgae euglena (midorimushi) on a public road. While Japan’s target to replace conventional cars with biofuel cars is lower than the US and other European countries, Euglena actively develops its business to provide biofuels to automobiles and aircraft.
