World’s First Plastic Sail for Large Ships Developed in Nagasaki

Nagasaki-based Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. developed the world’s first technology to control sails made of fiber-reinforced plastic, collaborating with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines. Their new ‘Wind Challenger Sail’ measures 23 meters by 54 meters. The attached sensors automatically detect wind direction and speed and contribute to reducing the use of fuels by more than 5% (*based on a 100,000-ton class cargo vessel traveling between Japan and Australia.) The system will be in service from October 2022. Source: Mainichi
