A sea mine, believed to be from World War II, was safely detonated off the coast of Wakamatsu Ward in Kitakyushu City. The mine was found at a depth of 22 meters during a soil survey for a planned offshore wind farm. Specialized divers from the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force conducted the controlled explosion, which resulted in a water plume rising to a height of 100 meters. The detonation was deemed necessary for safety reasons, even though the mine’s triggering mechanism had corroded. Additional artillery and bombs have also been discovered in the area, prompting ongoing discussions about their removal. Source: Kitakyushu City / KBC
