Fukuoka Fireworks Guide 2016

Summer in Japan isn’t complete without experiencing at least one hanabi taikai (fireworks festival)! Fireworks (花火, hanabi) have long been an integral part of Japanese summers. Originally held to ward off evil spirits, now there are hundreds of fireworks festivals across Japan and they are enjoyed mostly for the illuminations and dramatic sounds. It’s also a great opportunity to wear Japanese summer fashions – such as yukata or jinbei while watching the fireworks or sampling delicious festival food and drinks at the bustling stalls. We’ve compiled a list of upcoming fireworks displays in and near Fukuoka!

• Some festivals offer free shuttle buses, so check in advance.
• Arrive early to secure a spot with a good vantage point – it’s a great chance to relax before the area gets crowded too.
• Travel light – don’t bring big, bulky bags or belongings that will get in the way when maneuvering through crowds or others.
