Fukuoka City and World Bank to Support Start-ups in Developing Countries

Fukuoka City and the World Bank signed a memorandum on June 15 outlining plans to provide support to new business startups in developing countries. The city will seek to bring in workers from developing countries and dispatch local staff to overseas destinations. Through the initiative the city aims to share information about landfill practices and water supply technology in order to help create new business opportunities. The agreement forms part of the World Bank’s Urban Partnership Program, which looks to support developing countries by drawing on the expertise of various Japanese cities. A World Bank executive, who visited the city hall in mid-June, praised the local area’s water management and transportation network, adding that mayors from around the world can learn a lot from Fukuoka’s success.
