Kyushu’s oldest elephant, Ofuku, died on Nov. 1, she was 62 years old. Her fellow Asian elephant, Hanako, shared the pen with Ofuku for 37 years. Recently the elephant enclosure at Fukuoka City Zoo underwent a ¥600,000,000 renovation (2011), increasing the size of Ofuku and Hanako’s area by four times. Ofuku weighed three tons, was the third oldest elephant in Japan, and was kept at the Fukuoka Zoo since 1975.
